When Ravi’s family moves to America, he is shocked at how different things are.
One thing that I am especially proud of about our story, and one which I think sets it apart from others, is that over the course of five days, Joe and Ravi become friends without ever having exchanged a word. In fact, sometimes it’s hard to disconnect from her!
Within a week we had written the first section of our book. Joe’s lived in the same town all his life, and was doing just fine until his best friends moved away and left him on his own. Ms. Varadarajan, there are many interesting Indian and Indian American writers.

Veteran author Sarah Weeks and newcomer Gita Varadarajan (Var-ah-da-RAH-jen) have collaborated on Save Me a Seat, a middle grade novel that addresses common middle grade fears from the viewpoints of two characters who feel they are different.
Better yet, the story addressed feelings, emotions, bullying, and learning to rise above in the often confusing world of middle school.

Save Me a Seat is a recent middle grade book co-authored by veteran Sarah Weeks and newcomer Gita Varadarajan.

Two hours later I was celebrating the newfound understanding between Ravi and Joe. Joe Sylvester is tall for his age, always hungry, and struggles in class because he has APD (Auditory Processing Disorder). Gita and I grew up in very different surroundings, but we discovered that we have a lot in common, including the fact that we each have two sons whom our worlds revolve around.
I remember reading My Side of the Mountain in sixth grade and To Kill a Mockingbird and Lord of the Flies in seventh grade—all three of which remain among my favorite books today. SW: My theory is that people who write for kids are actually still very much kids at heart themselves. Ravi’s family just moved to America from India, and he’s finding it pretty hard to figure out where he fits in.
Most middle grade readers feel that they are “different”, so stories about characters like Joe and Ravi resonate with them. Part 1. As far as parents go, mine were wonderful but extremely embarrassing, and apparently my kids feel exactly the same way about me, though I can’t imagine why! Gravity. healthy.
People often ask if I would consider writing for older readers or even adults.
I would never win that battle. Possibly a "mirror book" for so many of our Indian students. STUDY.
The humor in Save Me a Seat will entice many readers.
I would write a chapter in Ravi’s voice and she would respond in Joe’s voice.
Finish Editing. As soon as I read the summary for this book, I knew I had to read it as it dealt with the immigrant experience from a child's point of view. This is a close to a perfect book. I was quiet and maybe even a little reticent. This was such a sweet book! When it came to the actual writing of the book, we developed a method that worked for us. This book is a great learning experience for young people, especially school age children.
But not before they must both deal with bullying, parents who don’t fully understand them, school lunches, and all the other challenges a new school year brings.
